Behavioural treatment of the dyssynergic defecation in chronically constipated elderly patients: a randomized controlled trial.

چکیده
A randomized controlled trial was carried out with the purpose to determine the effectiveness of EMG-biofeedback in the treatment of chronically constipated elderly patients with dyssynergic defecation as compared to a control condition characterized by information about the bowel functioning and counseling focused on the behavioural mechanisms involved in the defecation. With this purpose, after an initial assessment period (4 weeks), 30 chronically constipated elderly patients with dyssynergic defecation (11 males, 19 females) were randomly assigned to either EMG-biofeedback group (n = 15) or control group (n = 15). The results shown significant improvements in psychophysiological measures (EMG-activity during straining to defecate and anismus index), as well as in clinical variables (frequency of defecations per week, sensation of incomplete evacuation, difficulty evacuation level and perianal pain at defecation) only in the EMG-biofeedback group. The clinical benefits of this behavioural treatment were maintained at the follow-up period 2 months later.

The impact of anorectal biofeedback therapy on the quality of life of patients with dyssynergic defecation.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Dyssynergic defecation is a common health problem affecting the quality of life of patients adversely. We aimed to evaluate the impact of biofeedback therapy on the quality of life of constipated patients due to dyssynergic defecation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Constipated patients due to dyssynergic defecation were enrolled to the study. Patients having secondary causes of consti...
متن کاملMR defecography: a diagnostic test for the evaluation of pelvic floor motion in patients with dyssynergic defecation after biofeedback therapy
Background: Dyssynergic defecation is a major cause of chronic functional constipation as a common digestive complaint. We clinically evaluated the effects of biofeedback therapy on the pelvic floor motion indices through magnetic resonance (MR) defecography, quality of life and depression in patients with dyssynergic defecation. Methods : In this clinical trial study, among pa...
متن کاملDiagnosis and Treatment of Dyssynergic Defecation
Dyssynergic defecation is common and affects up to one half of patients with chronic constipation. This acquired behavioral problem is due to the inability to coordinate the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to evacuate stools. A detailed history, prospective stool diaries, and a careful digital rectal examination will not only identify the nature of bowel dysfunction, but also raise the index...

Biofeedback therapy is an instrument-based learning process centered on operant conditioning. The goal of biofeedback therapy in defecatory disorders is to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, retrain rectal sensation and coordinate pelvic floor muscles during evacuation. Biofeedback therapy, in a broader sense, includes education, counseling, and diaphragmatic muscle training as well as exerci...

Objective: Constipation is one of the most common digestive problems in patients undergoing hemodialysis. It has a negative effect on quality of life in these patients. As routine treatments are not effective in this regard, complementary therapies may help to overcome this condition. This study aimed to investigate the effect of acupressure on constipation in patients undergoing hemodialysis. ...
